Biography

José Luis Rodríguez is among the most important Spanish guitarists of his generation. Considered the continuation of the school of Mario Escudero, his music is characterized by his capacity of interpretation and composition with impeccable technique. He blends elements from many different cultures and styles, creating his own music from the most essential roots of flamenco resulting in a new kind of composition, flamenco in its origin, but universal and fresh in its sound. He has accompanied some of the most important figures of Flamenco song and dance, and for nine years was musical director of Cristina Hoyos’ prestigious Flamenco dance company (best known for her appearance in Carlos Saura’s Flamenco trilogy). In 2007, after composing the music for Belén Maya’s “Dibujos” and “Souvenir”, he composed “Alfonsina, la mujer del mar”, commissioned by Bailes Ferrer, with the voice of Cuban singer Gema Corredera where he combined both Flamenco and Afro-Cuban music, entitled by critics and the press in the US as “flamenco-filin”. In addition to having received numerous prizes as a guitarist and composer, he has also released CD’s of original compositions including “Andalusi” (1987), Compilation Select (2002), “Yerma” (2003), “Memoria” (2005) and “10X1” (2011). Rodriguez is currently on tour with his new production “Intimate Spaces”, as well as a new electro-acoustic projet “flamenco abstractions” with David Font (electronic musician) and “Of Essence and Time” - Sephardic-flamenco project.
